Sound principles in mind

Acoustic foamSound is a complex form of energy with differing power levels & wavelengths, expertise is
required to shape and control how it impacts your work environment. Sound is received in two parts, ‘direct’ and ‘reverberant’ components. The former is where the signal (noise) is received in a
direct line from the source and the latter via reflections from the environment i.e. office walls
and surfaces. These components manifest themselves as background noise, thus potential lack of privacy.
Introducing absorbent surfaces and acoustic materials into an environment will lower the overall sound pressure level and therefore the amount of noise present. Intelligent placement of these materials can greatly increase the benefit to the occupants. Desk screening, for example, will absorb sound‘at source’, placing absorbency solely at the office perimeter, will lower the overall background noise level but will not assist in privacy levels as adjacent desks still have the opportunity to impact on their neighbour. Therefore a balance of treatments will provide an even distribution of ‘noise control’ lowering both direct sound from co-workers, the overall level experienced, reducing stress, and increasing
both intelligibility and productivity.
